The effects of external and internal particle mass transfer resistance on rate for hydrogenations carried out on finely divided catalyst in slurry reactors are treated. A method is developed for estimating external particle mass transfer resistance from rate measurements and is demonstrated experimentally. The existence of reactions with negligible internal diffusion resistance and significant external diffusion resistance is modeled theoretically and demonstrated experimentally.
