The existence of a multiple or oscillatory condition in a packed bed reactor, with a strongly exothermic reaction, is reviewed. The following cases are discussed: simultaneous heat and mass transfer within and outside a catalyst particle, axial mixing in tubular reactors and a recycle reactor. It is shown that the condition describing multiplicity can be estimated solely on the basis of the CSTR analysis. A correspondence between stability and parametric sensitivity is presented.
