A knowledge of the hydrodynamic characteristics of mixer‐settlers is necessary for prediction of their performance under transient conditions. Residence time distribution studies are reported for the heavy phase in two types of mixer‐settler. These show the flow pattern to be intermediate between perfect mixing and perfect plug flow. A relationship is developed to describe the flow pattern and the various parameters are evaluated for the two units studied.
