The signal flowgraph and the matrix inversion methods for the determination of theoretical frequency response of some separation processes of interest to chemical engineers were described and compared with the difference operator (E) method. The application of these techniques to a 3‐and 5‐stage liquid‐liquid extraction column was demonstrated. For the systems under study, the signal flowgraph method was found to be less time consuming and is therefore recommended for frequency response modeling for such devices.
