The residence time distribution of a flow system can be determined from the response of the system to an arbitrary input, by a technique invoving Laguerre functions. This technique is convenient for digital computation, and is comparable in accuracy with other methods. The effects of the nature of the flow system, the arbitrary input, and the presence of noise are considered.
