The performances of four types of distillation tray of current industrial importance were compared in a common environment under similar hydraulic conditions. The four types investigated were the bubble‐cap, sieve, Turbogrid, and ripple trays. A single tray of each type, of representative dimensions, was used. The four trays were compared in regard to hydraulic characteristics, and also in regard to mass transfer efficiencies based on composition changes occurring in the gas phase during gas absorption. The comparison was carried out at relatively low vapor loadings in order to avoid excessive entrainment and channelling.
