A semi‐quanlitative analysis is presented of the pressures arising in catalyst pellets during the rapid venting of a typical high pressure fixed‐bed reactor. It is shown, for both macroporous pellets and the microporous powder particles within them, that the pressures will not exceed those of the surroundings by more than a few atmosphers. It is concluded that a rapid release of pressure may be effected without risking damage to the catalyst pellets.
