This investigation has shown that the unit operation of size reduction can be considered to be the result of many individual comminution events and that the distribution modulus of a comminuted solid is a property of the material, independent of whether the material has been ground separately or as part of a mixture. Investigation of the comminution of quartz and limestone in a rod mill has shown that the energy‐size reduction relationships which have been developed for the comminution of homogeneous materials can be used to analyze the comminution of mixtures. Size reduction of mixtures in rod mills has been found to be complex because energy is consumed preferentially by the harder material. Methods are presented to predict the distribution modulus, size modulus, and energy consumption for the size reduction of mixtures.
