A method is proposed for computing the speed of sound in a non‐ideal gas based on the approximation\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \left({\frac{{\partial H}}{{\partial E}}} \right)_s \cong \frac{H}{E} $$\end{document}In conjunction with the usual generalized compressibility plot and an analogous reduced enthalpy correction plot, it can be used near the critical point of a non‐dissociating gas. The method is also applicable to highly dissociated and ionized gases.
