Managers often face the need to renew their capabilities in dynamic markets. To increase their chances of success, we first offer a model of the capability‐building process that details five interconnected phases as well as the precautions and conditions to be taken into account for its completion. Our subsequent analysis of 29 empirical studies shows the advantages of integrating the routines of new capabilities, and this, for a successful process. Finally, we identify four situations around the formation of distinct capabilities, which should enlighten managers in their decision‐making in relation to the construction of new organizational capabilities.
