Abstract Pearlescent pigments are a relatively new class of pigments based on the optics of thin solid films. By using principles which are already known from eyecatching effects in nature (pearlescent lustre or brilliant iridescent colors in the world of animals or minerals), interference (or pearl) pigments are synthesized as highly refractive crystalling are synthesized as higly refractive crystalline platelets or multilayer thin solid flakes. The most important pigments of this type are made by coating muscovite mica with highly refractive metal oxides like TiO 2 or Fe 2 O 3 .
