Abstract Leakage analysis in application of the breakdown ordinance. The breakdown ordinance places certain demands on safety analysis of chemical plant. An important component of such a safety analysis is accordingly a description of the sources of danger which can trigger a breakdown and information about the effects of a breakdown. In this connection, it is particularly important that not all conceivable sources of danger should be considered but only those which cannot be reasonably excluded. Plant‐based sources of danger of this kind are, e.g., mechanical failure, failure of walls as a result of corrosion, leakage, etc. If the leak cross sections to be expected are known, then the prescribed propagation calculation for a possible breakdown can be performed. The leaks to be expected for various highly stressed plant components such as pipework, vessels, tanks, pipe‐cylinder joints, flanged joints are presented.
