Abstract Safety characteristics and their significance for planning and operating chemical plant. A knowledge of safety characteristics is a must for a safe operation of chemical processes. Disasters in chemical plant often occur due to a lack of knowledge of dangerous properties of the handled substances. Unexpected explosions or runaway reactions have been the result. Safety characteristics describe the reaction behaviour of substances as well as the fire and explosion hazards, provided that they are accurately determined and interpreted. This paper will sensitize research scientists, project engineers, and producers of chemicals to ensure that safety characteristics are correctly evaluated and applied in practice.
