Ceramic materials of construction. New ceramic materials have extremely attractive potential properties and can be optimized within wide limits for specific applications. Predominant properties are pronounced hardness and resistance to wear, chemical resistance, as well as high‐temperature stability in use as structural ceramics and e. g. ionic conductivity for special applications as functional ceramics. Apart from reduction of the brittle fracture behaviour of industrial ceramics by materials modification, attention is focussed on efforts to obtain reproducible component quality and on know‐how transfer for appropriate design and associated joining techniques.
