Expert systems – structure and fields of application . Expert systems are programs for solving problems in narrow fields of application, which demand the competence of an expert. These systems, which process not only data but primarily knowledge, have attracted considerable interest in recent years. This contribution explains the principal characteristics and the mode of operation of expert systems, and dilineates their potential applications. Moreover, the approach adopted in the development of expert systems is briefly considered.
