Behaviour of (heavy) metals on incineration of municipal wastes. Incineration technology is being used to a growing extent for the disposal of municipal wastes. In order to make this technology less harmful to the environment, steps must be taken to counteract the emission of HCl and SO 2 and NO x as well as of some metals, above all mercury. For this purpose the pollutant inventory must be known more reliably than was previously the case. Care must also be taken that the problems connected with pollutants are not merely transposed from the air to water or solids. If necessary, the fractions that are soluble in a slightly acid medium must be removed from the fly ash, reacted chemically, and immobilized as compact materials. The actual incineration must be performed in such a way that inert slag is formed so that reusability is assured. The slag may also have to undergo chemical treatment.
