Safe chemical plants – a constant challenge to technology . The general public is increasingly questioning the safety of industrial plants. In the field of chemistry, in particular, the impression is being evoked that especially serious and continually increasing risks are in evidence in chemical plants. To begin with, the present report proves by means of statistical data that such portrayals are not in keeping with the facts. Then the safety concept in the planning and operation of chemical plants is discussed. With the aid of examples the ceaseless and successful endeavours towards achieving ever greater safety are described. Examples from the field of systematic research in industrial safety are also cited. Finally, the report deals with the plant operators' own responsibility, and cooperation with supervisory bodies and governmental control organizations.
