Abstract Zeolites are among the most versatile and technically interesting porous materials. Within a period of 60 years they have conquered various areas of application, beginning with adsorption and then quickly extending into ion exchange and catalysis. New structure types and novel material classes have made their way towards commercialization, requiring the ability of economically viable, large scale production. This presents new challenges for the production technology, including but not limited to reactor design, process control and safety. At the same time, global economic developments press for continuous process intensification and cost optimization.
