Man‐made membrane‐based solar energy harvest systems for active ion transport have been increasingly developed in recent years, however, a great challenge still remains in developing highly effective synthetic all‐solid systems. During the past decades, artificial photo‐induced active transport systems defined as “chemical” and “physical” modes that are capable of transporting protons or metal ions have been successfully constructed. This Concept article discusses these, as well as the challenges in the field for creating practical light‐driven artificial ion pumps. For more information, see the Concept by L. Li and Z. Tang et al. on page 13748 ff.
