Since 1997 , a group of sulfonium salts equipped with a polyhydroxylated side chain structure have been isolated from plants of genus Salacia and identified as potent α‐glucosidase inhibitors. Because of their unique structural features and promising biological activities, this group of natural products are considered as potential lead compounds for the identification of new sulfonium‐type antidiabetics. A systemic summary of recently developed synthetic methods is believed to be a good opportunity to facilitate further pharmaceutical investigations of this series of natural products and related carbohydrate chemistry. In their Minireview on page 13458 ff., Y. Yang, W. Xie et al., summarize recently developed strategies that have been applied to the construction of natural de‐ O ‐sulfonated sulfonium sugars.
