The engineering of heme proteins has proved to be and an effective method of producing biomimetic iron porphyrins with excellent catalytic properties for carbene transfer reactions. Computational studies have been extensively used to help understand the important mechanistic aspects of these reactions. In the review on page 13231 ff., Y. Zhang summarizes the advances in the computational studies that have shed light on the mechanistic aspects of heme carbene transfer reactions.
