Research on molecular communication in the context of artificial cellular systems has recently gained momentum, albeit it is still in its early stages, because it is an important prerequisite for the realization of higher order complexity and collective behaviors. The different experimental approaches and underlying physicochemical principles for communicating artificial cells are summarized in this review. For more details see the Minireview by F. C. Simmel et al. on page 12659 ff.
