Beryllium is the least investigated nonradioactive element and still many mysteries and prejudice surround its chemistry. However, in recent years significant advances have been made concerning the coordination chemistry of beryllium in solution. This is epitomized by the elemental symbol emerging from a nontransparent, viscous liquid, whereas the emerald color references the origin of the element. The Minireview by M. R. Bucher on page 12018 ff. summarizes the recent developments in the field of beryllium research. The main focus of this Minireview is placed on the relation between the structure of the compounds and the corresponding reactivity.
