Naphthalene diimides (NDIs) are robust, planar molecules with tuneable electronic properties. Their electron deficient polycyclic aromatic structure yields high electron affinity and a capability of self‐assembly to form higher architectures. Functionalisation may dramatically change the photophysical properties of the NDIs. One effective way used to control the opto/electronic properties of NDIs is to extend the π‐system with fused aromatic or heteroaromatic rings (annulenes), which lead to a subclass of annulated NDIs. For a systematic outlook on the synthetic strategies used to make the diverse variety of core‐annulated systems, see the Minireview by S. J. Langford et al. on page 7058 ff.
