CeO 2 catalyzed C−N bond cleavage reaction of amides is reported. This catalytic system overcomes the typical stability issue of amides and phenols and thus offers a straightforward route to the synthesis of phenolic esters. Compared to previously reported catalytic methods for the phenolysis of activated amides, this method offers advantages of catalyst reusability, easy catalyst/product separation, and a wide substrate scope with a high turnover number for unactivated amides.
