The interest in metastable MoS 2 has been growing during the last five years. In the Review on page 15942 ff. F. Q. Huang et al. summarize the crystal phase and band structure of metastable polytypes and also the recent progress on the synthetic approaches and the uncovered intriguing physical properties. Although encouraging achievements are obtained, challenges still exist.
