Areal negative thermal expansion (NTE) in the tetragonal porous framework [Cu 3 (cdm) 4 ] (cdm=carbamoyldicyanomethanide) was achieved by modification of the “wine rack” mechanism common to square‐motif frameworks, in which the rigid cdm pivits asymmetrically about the Cu. A complex interplay between CO 2 loading and temperature was found; NTE was not damped by CO 2 , and the changing unit‐cell aspect ratio did not alter the aperture for CO 2 diffusion when pore contraction countered thermal fluctuations.
