Functional coordination polymers are commonly prepared by solution reactions. In the current study, however, a method to prepare amorphous coordination polymers by photoirradiation of liquids was developed. UV irradiation of transparent ionic liquids containing cationic ruthenium sandwich complexes produced yellow microporous coordination polymers exhibiting gas adsorption properties.
