Combining macrocycles and iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) is a rational strategy for creating drug delivery systems that target tumors, deliver potent anticancer agents, and effect thermal therapy. Macrocycles can be attached to IONPs either indirectly or directly. For a detailed discussion of different strategies for attaching macrocycles to IONPs as well as a look at different mechanisms for drug release see the Review by A. Trabolsi et al. on page 8333 ff.
