Halogen and hydrogen bonding were compared in the solid state, solution, and gas phase in three series of halogen‐bonded complexes derived from p ‐substituted pyridine derivatives and 3 N ‐halosuccinimides (iodo‐, bromo‐, and chloro‐; NIS, NBS, and NCS) and an equivalent series of hydrogen‐bonded complexes of succinimide. The bond energies for the halogen bonds increase with the basicity of the base and Lewis acidity of the halogen, while the hydrogen bond energies are intermediate between those in complexes of NIS and NBS.
