A novel relay catalytic system , consisting of a binuclear copper and a vitamin B1 analogue, allows for the aerobic oxidation of N ‐aryltetrahydroisoquinolines to dihydroisoquinolones under mild conditions. Mechanistic studies revealed that the copper catalyst oxidizes amines to the corresponding iminium salts, which are subsequently oxygenated to lactam products by reaction with the vitamin B1 analogue.
