The square‐planar monomer NiL 2 (L=2‐ethoxy‐6‐( N ‐methyl‐iminomethyl)phenolate) reacts with Ni 2+ or Co 2+ to form heptanuclear discs [Co x Ni 7– x (OH) 6 (L) 6 ](ClO 4 ) 2 ⋅2 CH 3 CN, whereas the reaction with Zn 2+ generates a butterfly [Zn 2 Ni 2 (OH) 2 Cl 2 ]. A summation method to analyze the mass spectra provided ample information on the distribution of Co and Ni within each cluster and their statistical distribution within the crystals.
