Right angles at the right place! The orthogonally disposed functional groups on the indane wings of the tribenzotriquinacene molecular skeleton offer the perfect geometry to enable the assembly of molecular metallosquares that use organic ligands as vertices. The insert highlights that, starting from the same optically pure monomer unit, the tetrameric chiral molecular square can be prepared through two complementary synthetic routes.
