Scientists are similar to artists. Entering a museum, painters and sculptors can take inspiration for their work. Similarly, chemists can look to the natural portfolio of proteins and create something completely new by discovering the minimal structural elements required for a functional enzyme. Amino acids and prosthetic groups are the chemists colors and pencils, while de novo design principles and computational tools have the same value as perspective and rules of proportion, without which elements could not be arranged into a harmonious whole. In their Full Paper on page 15960 ff. , M. Faiella et al. borrow the structural elements of ferritins and the functional residues of peroxidases for the de novo design of a minimally sized, peptide‐based catalyst.
