Phosphate in the CoPi water‐oxidation catalyst is shown by NMR spectroscopic studies to exist as mobile interlayer ions. This is consistent with the idea that the catalyst has a layered‐double‐hydroxide‐like structure and can accept a wide range of interlayer proton shuttles.
