A class of structurally new amphiphile based on steroidal lipophilic groups have been prepared by P. S. Chae et al. on page 9485 ff. The results show that the new amphiphiles confer enhanced stability to a variety of membrane proteins in solution relative to popular conventional detergent dodecylmaltoside (DDM). The potential of the new amphiphiles as tools for solubilization, isolation, and stabilization is evident from their success with a variety of membrane proteins.
