Organic chemistry meets materials and polymer sciences for the design and synthesis of a new family of functional surfmers used for decorating nanoparticles with phosphonate groups. In their Full Paper on page 5201 ff. , P. Froimowicz, K. Landfester et al. show that the synthesized particles exhibit great potential for the application in biological studies, such as cellular uptake, and can also be used as templates for biomimetic mineralization at the nanoscale level.
