Based on the different oxidation potentials of endohedral fullerenes Sc 3 N@C 80 I h and D 5 h and Sc 3 N@C 78 , an efficient and useful method that avoids HPLC has been developed for their separation. Selective chemical oxidation of the Sc 3 N@ D 5 h ‐C 80 isomer and Sc 3 N@C 78 by using an acetylferrocenium salt [Fe(COCH 3 C 5 H 4 )Cp] + followed by column chromatographic separation and reduction with CH 3 SNa resulted in the isolation of pure Sc 3 N@ I h ‐C 80 , Sc 3 N@C 78 , and a mixture of Sc 3 N@ D 5 h ‐C 80 and Sc 3 N@C 68 .
