Cool cages! The use of phosphonates has led to formation of a family of manganese(II)–lanthanide(III) heterometallic cages with structurally beautiful cores (see figure). Magnetic studies show antiferromagnetic interactions within the manganese centers and huge entropy change in the {Mn 4 Gd 6 } complex, which, in principle, can be used for ultralow temperature cooling.
