Unique biphasic binding to calf‐thymus DNA and to the polynucleotides poly(dA–dT) 2 , poly(dG–dC) 2 , poly(dA)–poly(dT), and poly(dG)–poly(dC) has been observed for Ru II –polypyridyl complexes with a pendant catechol functionality. The Ru II –polypyridyl complexes preferentially bind to more flexible, alternating purine–pyrimidine sequences, particularly those that contain AT.TA steps, with very high affinities ( K b >10 7 M −1 ).
