Molecular canary : Spiropyran substituted with an amidine group (SP–Am; see scheme) is a sensitive reversible colorimetric CO 2 probe and can function as a molecular canary. Aqueous alcohol solutions containing Sp–Am are purple and on addition of low levels of CO 2 gas become yellow. The purple colour is rapidly recovered when CO 2 is removed from the solution by inert gas or air sparging, or slowly when allowed to stand uncovered.
