An adaptable polyoxometalate macrocycle : The crown‐type polyoxometalate [P 8 W 48 O 184 ] 40− has been prepared in the absence of potassium to give two new mixed lithium/ammonium compounds, allowing cation binding within the heteropolyanion to be investigated. Characterization of binding sites in the {P 8 W 48 } cluster could enable prediction of reaction products and selective functionalization of internal and external binding sites.
