Inside and out : The external and internal surface of silica nanotubes (SNTs) can be independently modified by a sol–gel grafting reaction. The azobenzene‐based ligands on the external surface recognize Hg 2+ through a color change, whereas the BODIPY‐based ligands attached to the internal surface recognize Pb 2+ through fluorescence enhancement. Thus, the modified SNTs selectively recognize both Hg 2+ and Pb 2+ (see figure).
