Selective functionalisation of 1,5‐cyclooctadiene, either to a carboxylic acid or to a γ‐lactone, is achieved by a novel sequence of reactions involving quantitative oxygenation with oxygen and CC coupling with carbon monoxide (see graphic). The rhodium hydroxy–alkyl–allyl complex shown is the active intermediate that promotes the elimination of the organic compounds.
