Salt of the (rare) earth : The reactions of ytterbium(II) iodide with alkali metal salts of the [CpRu(CO) 2 ] and [Cp 2 Re] anions afford molecular compounds that have two unsupported YbTM bonds (TM=transition metal; see scheme). Electron localisability indicator calculations were performed and revealed highly polar metal–metal bonds.
