Abstract A novel family of inorganic aprotic superacids has been found. Oxochlorides and chloride of sulfur combined with aluminium halides (SOCl 2 · n AlX 3 , SO 2 Cl 2 · n AlX 3 , MeSO 2 Cl· n AlX 3 , CF 3 SO 2 Cl· n AlX 3 , S 2 Cl 2 · n AlX 3 ; n = 2 or 3, X = Br or Cl) are found to be effective promoters for the cracking and isomerization of alkanes at room temperature.
