Abstract Endplate bolted joints are largely used in steel frames and have been the subject of many theoretical studies. The purpose of this work is to present an analytical model, which takes into account the bolt preloading effect on the axial behaviour of the tensile zone of an endplate bolted beam‐to‐column connection under increasing monotonous static loading. The article describes the necessary formulation used to evaluate the properties of the proposed analytical model. Specimens considered for the validation of the theoretical model reflect different geometries, strengths and preloading conditions of bolts. These prototypes were designed to undergo the collapse modes contained in Eurocode3. The analytical model permits to form trilinear and non‐linear load‐displacement curves covering elastic, plastic and ultimate domains. The load‐displacement curves of the theoretical model were compared with the experimental ones.
