Abstract The current study is devoted to mechanical resistance of so‐called offset welded RHS joints where RHS brace members are offset from the chord centreline under brace axial compression. Paper presents numerical investigation results of structural behaviour of mentioned joints under monotonically increased load. For these purposes, Abaqus FE‐models were developed by using C3D8R 8‐noded solid linear brick elements with attention to mesh size effect and weld modelling. The force‐displacement curves corresponding to different geometries of joints were analysed focusing on the failure modes. Based on conducted numerical simulations, deformation limits and failure criteria for offset joints were adopted and verified. It is stated that the 3% b 0 ultimate deformation limit chosen by Lu et al. (1994) and adopted by the IIW as main criterion of joints' failure could be reasonable revised.
