This communication describes the major aspects concerning the design and construction of the new railway bridge over the Shire river, located on pk 275+133 of Limbe‐Nkaya railway line, in Malawi. This railway line makes the connection between Nkaya Junction and Limbe, in Blantyre and is used both for passengers and cargo. The existing bridge has an advanced state of materials deterioration, resulting from maintenance difficulties, wear due to its exploration and high susceptibility to erosion phenomena. The cost‐benefit of an existing bridge rehabilitation intervention was quite unfavourable and the option for new bridge was found preferable.
