In response to the criticisms of Wold et al . 1, the PLS model‐space inconsistency previously described 2 is expressed in latent‐variable language. The inability of the conventional NIPALS PLS algorithm to recover its own decomposition from an already decomposed matrix is also discussed. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
